A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in public works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
