Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
