Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
